Job Description


To support the Serco Heath Executive team to design, develop and delivery strong key media communication and to maximum favourable coverage for Serco health across all media relevant to our chosen markets, in order to enhance our reputation with customers, service users, partners and wider stakeholders, both current and potential

Key roles and accountabilities

Strategy and Plans



Monitor and assess trends in relevant media - print, broadcast and digital - and to develop, in conjunction with the Communication Director productive strategic relationships with key external commentators and influencers.

Business partner with Business Units and other Divisional functions to identify opportunities for reputational enhancement.

Develop and maintain strong relationships with Healthcare customers

Prepare and develop media handling plans, and execute these plans as appropriate.

To lead and work with the Business Units and other Divisional functions to identify short and medium term reputational risks, and to develop, agree and execute media handling plans to mitigate them.

Prepare and where necessary implement robust processes for media handling and external communications liaison in a crisis, and during a safety, security or operational emergency. Provide advice to senior management as appropriate.

To have an influence in Serco Healthcare strategic and financial objectives in its chosen markets by sustaining a public image which makes customers and partners feel positive about being associated with us.

Customers and Markets

Have the ability to building strong working relationships with customers both internal and external by building trust and respect, and understanding and representing back to Serco their priorities and sensitivities.

To ensure that media enquiries at any time are answered quickly and professionally, with all necessary consultation with the Communication Director, customers, partners, Serco senior leaders and frontline management.

Business Partner with the external communications team in shaping the perceptions of key audiences in support of major business development activities such as new market entry, bids and acquisitions

Measure the tone and extent of media coverage in conjunction with the Communication Director, assessing the cumulative effect on key audiences and developing, agreeing and executing media handling plans to address that.

Organisation and People

To develop and nurture contract based media communicators.

To coach frontline management and contract level communications representatives in basic media interaction and the assessment of communications opportunities and risks.

Person Specification

Strong media relations experience, within Healthcare or similar related field

Graduate calibre and or professionally qualified

Communications background having operated in substantial customer centric organisation

Experience of developing Media Relations strategies that deliver improved business performance across the business

Highly impactful, articulate, strong relationship builder with the ability to influence at all levels

Excellent analytical skills with ability to assimilate information quickly, and communicate key messages simply and effectively to the business to aid decision making.
