Job Description

Summary:

Imagine being the expert on explosives, bomb disposal and all types of ammunition. That would be your role as an Ammunition Technician. You need GCSE grade C (or equivalent) in Maths, English and Science, plus a keen eye for detail. If you've got all of the above, we'll teach you how to inspect, repair, store and dispose of everything from guided weapons to SA80 ammunition clips. At the same time, you can get qualifications such as an apprenticeship, NVQ and a Category C driving license. With these, you can take your career in all kinds of directions. As the biggest corps in the Army, the RLC has all sorts of opportunities, but is still a close-knit, welcoming team.

Get in. Get on.

You are a specialist in explosives, bomb disposal and all types of ammunition. You test, repair and safely store everything from SA80 ammunition clips to anti-aircraft missile systems. For this kind of work, you may get a bonus of £4,500. You work with front line units and UK security services. We'll give you responsibility early in your career and very thorough training. When you finish learning, you will be a Lance Corporal. Later on, you can work as part of a bomb disposal team, which means extra pay.

Get skills

As an Ammunition Technician you learn the basic science behind the ammunition before moving onto practical training. You then learn how different kinds of ammunition work, and how to inspect, repair and store them. Safe disposal of ammunition is also a major part of your role, from normal explosives and munitions to guided weapons. Specialist training shows you how.

Get training

During basic training, you'll learn how to be a soldier: how to survive outdoors and fire weapons. The training also boosts your fitness and stamina. After mastering the basics you train to handle, test, store and destroy explosives and ammunition. You can get more qualifications as you move up the ranks and specialise in Bomb Disposal.

Get qualified

The Army can help you gain a range of qualifications. These could include:

  • NVQ Level 2 Certificate Logistics & Transport
  • Affiliate Member of CILT
  • NVQ Level 2 Apprenticeship Explosive Storage and Maintenance
  • Higher qualifications as your career progresses

Get promoted

We'll be behind you every step of the way as you move up the ranks. Right from the start of your training, you'll get the support and encouragement you need to make a success of your career. Work hard and you could get promoted, which will mean more responsibility and extra pay. And along the way, you'll pick up qualifications that are recognised by civilian employers.
